  • On Franz Schreker

    A series of translations, essays, and information about the Austrian/ German composer. Schreker was one of many Jewish composers working in berlin targeted by the third reich. His music was prolific during the interwar years, with some years seeing over 400 performances of his works. He was long targeted during the rise of the Nazis, and was one of the first composers to have their music banned. This ensured that his music would be suppressed for decades. Schreker died in 1934 due to complications from stroke.

  • On Hans-Joachim Koellreutter

    Writings on the German-Brazilian polymath. Koellreutter began his life in Freiburg, Germany and as his first artistic pursuits he studied composition with Paul Hindemith and conducting with Hermann Scherchen. Koellreutter moved to Brasil during the Jewish oppression of the third reich. While in Brazil he began organizing ensembles including the Brazilian National Orchestra, and Musica Viva. Additionally, he began his teaching post at the Federal University of Brasil, with his most notable student Tom Jobim. Koellreuter’s theories of esthetics helped shape both classical Brazilian music, as well as the formation of Bossa Nova.
